Corneille Ewango A hero of the Congo Basin forest

Video: TED TALKS
The Congo like the Amazon is a huge area of amazing bio-diversity… who knows what important resources may be their, perhaps a cure for AIDs, which would not be surprising since it’s thought The Congo is where it originated.
It is always uplifting to see someone who motives are towards helping people and the planet… rather than trying to win in the Rat Race.
Ants!
July 9, 2008
Video: YouTube
Being a Hippie, I go out of my way not to tread on Ants… but if they come in my home, that’s another matter.
This video upset me a bit, because I guess the Ants ‘got it in the neck’, when the scientists pored concrete down their nest, to study it’s complexity, it’s air conditioning, it’s farming and waste management system. What they ended up with was an incredible 3D concrete casting of the Ant’s nest… after they removed the dirt from around it.
Now if only humans, like the ants, could work towards a common cause, rather than participating in the rat race, perhaps things would run smoother and we would be less likely to destroy our home. Bye the way, do you know what happens when you win the Rat race?

Unfortunately the video seems to have been removed, maybe due to some pressure being exerted on YouTube? who knows. Basically the video tells the story of two Japanese people (Junichi and Toru) speaking out about the Japanese whale meat scam, and then they were thrown in Gaol. Many people have written to the Japanese Prime Minister to have them released, but as far as we know they are still behind bars.
On the 16 February 1942 the Japanese gunned down 22 nurses on a beach in Sarawak and before anybody accuses me of racism, forget it, it’s a fact. Another fact is I have nothing against the Japanese, but I do have a problem with those in charge of whatever race or religion, who claim to be honorable, when in fact they are obviously not.
I do not blame the Japanese per say, in fact it is very reassuring that some of the Japanese have enough honor to stand up to those in their government, who it appears have zero honor… proven by their obvious lies about their on going murdering of Whales being ’scientific research’.
These are highly intelligent and very social animals, and to have that smug so and so, Joji Morishita, from the Japanese delegation at the recent Chillian International Whaling Commission, liken the murdering whales to the slaughter of cattle… an animal of little intelligence and social awareness, well it goes beyond the pale and there is not anything honorable about someone who persists with their claim of scientific research, an honorable person or country would not hide behind lies Joji Morishita.
The Trap - Fk You Buddy (part 3 of 6)
June 26, 2008
Video: YouTube
I remember years ago seeing something about a study, that used Rats to simulate the effects of population pressures and diet on people… the premise was that our behaviors are in a lot of ways similar.
In these tests they used an enclosed system and they steadily increased the population of rats. Now, to take out some of the variables they ensured that there was plenty of good food and water. The results were that as the population levels increased, the neuroses increased, there was rape, murder and even cannibalism, as the populations went up… and this should of surprised them because?
It’s only corporations, politicians and religious nutters who’d argue that limiting populations is a bad thing.
Next in the rat house, they tried two other experiments. One where they gave the rats a healthy diet and water and alcohol to choose from… these rats chose water. Then they gave the rats an unhealthy diet; you know donuts and big Macs type crap, with the same option for water or alcohol, this time the rats chose alcohol.
Now, it occurs to me that the way we are being forced (Trapped if you like) to live; which suits the corporations alone, is bound to create problems. Even the family unit it’s self is, in a since, not ideal, in fact far from it.
Perhaps the problem is that our social evolution has been messed up and out of sync with our forced living style… that the discarded village tribalism, where there is a mixture of kids, parents and grandparents living together, and a system where one’s food comes largely from your own area (with some trade) and everybody’s got a say and nobody is left behind, not unlike what some Hippies were advocating (forget the media crap) or if you prefer… like Switzerland, only hopefully with a little more spark.
Theo Jansen The art of creating creatures

Video: Ted Talks
Sometimes strange contraptions can teach us unexpected things. If I wait a little longer, maybe it will come to me… however, like most thoughtful art, I like to look at it, even if I don’t understand it. But there’s no mistaking the ingenuity of these pieces of Art, so Theo’s accomplished one important thing for Art, which is, it has caused me to think about it.
The Blue Planet - Deep Sea Pt.1

I’m a huge fan of David Attenborough and his BBC videos. Most of us have see this series before, possibly a number of times, but it never fails to fascinate me… all those weird, ugly sometimes beautiful creatures which seem so alien, in fact the idea for the monster in the movie Alien, came from one of these creatures.
Eritrea - Greening Eritrea (Part 1)
June 19, 2008
Video: YouTube
This is a good news story about Eritrea, one of the world’s newest nations, a land devastated by war and the stripping of it’s trees to feed camels and to provide firewood for cooking. Eritrea now has some hope thanks to a Japanese American call Sato.
It all started with the re-establishment of Mangroves… something we had, for years been wiping out to provide profits for developers, despite being warned by scientists that they were vital for fish nurseries and the ecology in general.
As with most reclamation projects, the solution is to look at the way Nature does things, then learn from this often simple solution and give it a hand. Initially they had to use small amounts of fertilizers to get the Mangroves started, but once they got going, the areas ecology picked up, soon there were more fish, crabs, prawns and more plant matter… it was off and running.
“This is a low-tech solution to hunger and poverty. In these times of food price rises and global warming, it is just what the world needs,” Manzanar project manager Ammanuel Yemane, of Eritrea’s Fisheries Ministry.

Life After People

Video: YouTube
I know it’s a longish video (almost 90 minutes), but despite it’s semi macabre nature, it’s strangely alluring and well done… it’s a sort of ‘12 Monkeys’ in a sense, minus Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe.
I’m looking at you

What an outstanding creature… truly beautiful. Though I don’t know why it’s twisting it’s head around like that.
I would love to have a Peregrine Falcon, but in Australia it’s illegal without special permits; for clearing airports of birds etc. To tell you the truth I’m ambivalent about pets, because they don’t get to live a ‘natural’ life. But if I get back into aviation running an airstrip, I may look into it again.
In support of having Peregrine Falcons. I think if a condition is set that if you breed Peregrine Falcons, you have to release say half of your birds into the wild… or better still, into the cities, to help keep down the number of gulls and pigeons, that would definitely be a good thing for everyone but the gulls and pigeons.
Bluff

Photo: Stumble
This relates in some ways to my recent series on Dungeons & Dragons. During an adventure/game you might decide in a particular situation to try and bluff it out. Whether or not you are successful depends to a certain extent on a roll of the dice… however; there’s always an ‘however’, if your trying to bluff a huge bad ass Dragon, there’s a good chance your going to get crispyfryed or chomped. These hounds could probably be fooled or Bluffed with a masking spell and a bit of luck with the dice.
Hey Japanese whalers, where’s your honour ?
March 26, 2008
First, lets see a whale being treated as a friend (see video below)
Video: intrepidberkeleyexplorer via YouTube
The video above shows how humans can live in harmony with whales and any other friendly wild animals for that matter.
Now back to those greedy Japanese whalers.

Image: madmermaids.com
Japanese whalers and government, Just where is your honour?
Maybe you lost your honour in amongst the many millions of yen you are making in the name of research.
Japanese big business and government are not honorable, they are not whaling for research.
If these whale companies spent the same amount of money on building offshore fish farms as they did chasing whales through the Southern Ocean, then they would have themselves a constant renewable source of fish to eat. Salmon, Cod and Halibut are all good options for farming and the latest technology has made offshore fish farming much more viable.
